ABOUT ESTREITO DA CALHETA

Estreito da Calheta is located in Concelho da Calheta, which is the biggest in the island with circa 116 km2.

This “freguesia” was one of the first settlements in the island to be populated and farmed in XV century, and it has stayed an agricultural village, with wine and sugar cane as its main explorations, as well as potatoes, sweet potatoes and beans, among others.

The current population reaches 2.000 people, due to migratory movements from this area to mainly South Africa and Venezuela.

ABOUT CAPELA DE NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO

Located in Sítio da Igreja Abaixo, this chapel was established in 1873 by André de França Andrade.

As legend tells it, André de França Andrade was a noble man from Poland whom was given a farm that would become the original village of Estreito da Calheta.
